Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about chiropractic care after a car accident in the Seattle & Bellevue area.

🩺 Treatment Questions

How soon after a car accident should I see a chiropractor?
+

As soon as possible — ideally within the first 72 hours. Even if you feel fine, many injuries (especially whiplash) don't produce obvious symptoms until 24–48 hours after the accident, once the adrenaline wears off.

Getting evaluated early is important for two reasons: it begins the healing process before inflammation becomes entrenched, and it creates medical documentation linking your injuries to the accident — which protects your insurance and legal claim.

Most of our listed providers can see accident patients within 24–48 hours of calling.

Do I need a referral from a medical doctor first?
+

No. In Washington State, chiropractors are portal-of-entry providers, meaning you can go directly to a chiropractor without a physician referral. Simply call the office, let them know you were in a car accident, and provide your insurance information.

How long will treatment take?
+

Treatment length depends on the severity of your injuries. Most patients see significant improvement within 4–8 weeks of consistent care. A full recovery plan typically spans 3–6 months for moderate injuries.

  • Mild soft tissue injuries: 4–8 weeks
  • Moderate whiplash: 8–16 weeks
  • Disc injuries or severe cases: 3–6 months or longer

Your chiropractor will reassess your progress regularly and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.

What happens at my first appointment?
+

Your first visit typically includes:

  • A detailed consultation about the accident and your symptoms
  • A physical examination including range-of-motion testing
  • X-rays (usually on-site) to identify structural injuries not visible externally
  • A diagnosis and personalized treatment plan
  • Often, your first adjustment or treatment in the same visit

Plan for 60–90 minutes for your first appointment. Follow-up visits are typically 30–45 minutes.

Is chiropractic care safe after an auto accident?
+

Yes. Chiropractic care is widely recognized as a safe and effective first-line treatment for whiplash, neck pain, and back pain from auto accidents. All providers on our site take X-rays first to rule out fractures or serious instability before beginning treatment.

Research consistently shows that early chiropractic intervention leads to better outcomes than delayed treatment or relying solely on pain medication.

šŸ“‹ Insurance Questions

Will I have to pay out of pocket for treatment?
+

In most cases, no. Washington State requires all auto insurance policies to include at least $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage. This pays for chiropractic care with no deductible, regardless of who caused the accident.

Our providers bill your insurance directly. Most patients pay nothing out of pocket during their treatment.

What is PIP coverage?
+

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is a required component of all Washington State auto insurance policies. It covers medical expenses — including chiropractic care — after a car accident, regardless of who was at fault.

Washington requires a minimum of $10,000 in PIP coverage per person. Many policies offer higher limits. PIP typically has no deductible and begins paying immediately once you file a claim.

To use it: call your insurance company, report the accident, and ask to open a PIP claim. They'll give you a claim number to provide to your chiropractor.

What if I don't have auto insurance?
+

If you were a passenger in someone else's vehicle, you can use the vehicle owner's PIP coverage. If the other driver was at fault, you may be able to claim against their liability insurance.

If you were driving without insurance, options include the at-fault driver's liability coverage, your health insurance, or a personal injury attorney who can help pursue compensation. Contact us and we can help point you in the right direction.

Can filing a PIP claim increase my insurance rates?
+

Washington State law generally prohibits insurers from raising your rates solely because you filed a PIP claim after an accident that wasn't your fault. However, policies differ — it's worth reviewing your specific policy or asking your agent about their surcharge policy before filing.

šŸ„ Injury Questions

I feel fine after my accident. Do I still need to be seen?
+

Yes — especially if it was anything more than a very minor fender-bender at low speed. Whiplash and soft tissue injuries are notorious for having delayed symptoms. Adrenaline released during the accident can mask pain for 24–72 hours.

Many people who "felt fine" after an accident develop chronic neck pain, headaches, or back pain weeks later — conditions that could have been significantly reduced or prevented with early treatment.

A brief evaluation costs you nothing with PIP coverage and provides peace of mind.

What is whiplash and how is it treated?
+

Whiplash is a soft tissue neck injury caused by a rapid back-and-forth motion of the head — like the cracking of a whip. It's the most common auto injury, affecting the muscles, tendons, discs, and nerves of the cervical spine.

Symptoms include neck pain and stiffness, headaches, shoulder pain, arm numbness, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating. These may not appear for 1–3 days after the accident.

Chiropractic treatment for whiplash typically includes:

  • Spinal adjustments to restore joint motion
  • Cervical traction to decompress injured discs
  • Soft tissue therapy for muscle spasm
  • Postural rehabilitation exercises
  • Ice/heat therapy guidance
Can chiropractic help with post-accident headaches?
+

Yes. Many post-accident headaches are cervicogenic — meaning they originate from injuries to the neck and cervical spine rather than the head itself. Chiropractic care that addresses the underlying neck injury is highly effective for this type of headache.

If your headaches are severe, sudden-onset, or accompanied by vision changes, confusion, or weakness, seek emergency care immediately as these may indicate a more serious injury.
